How Often Shoul A Fire Risk Assessment Be Reviewed

How Often Should a Fire Risk Assessment Be Reviewed?

16 February 2026 |

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, every non-domestic premises must have a suitable and sufficient Fire Risk Assessment in place.

But one of the most common questions we’re asked is:

“How often does it need reviewing?”

There Is No Fixed Expiry Date — But There Is a Legal Duty

The law requires Fire Risk Assessments to be reviewed regularly and whenever:

  • There are structural changes to the building
  • The use of the premises changes
  • Staff numbers increase
  • New equipment or materials are introduced
  • A fire incident or near miss occurs

For most businesses, best practice is an annual review.

Our Fire Risk Assessments in Essex and London include built-in annual reminders to ensure your compliance never drifts.

Why Annual Reviews Matter

Businesses evolve. Layouts change. Teams grow. Storage areas expand.

An assessment written three years ago may no longer reflect current risks.

As part of our wider [Health & Safety consultancy services], we ensure fire safety is integrated into your ongoing compliance system — not left in a drawer.

If you’re unsure when yours was last updated, it may be time to review your Fire Risk Assessment service provision.
