Health & Safety Policies, RAMS & Documentation

Clear and up-to-date documentation forms the foundation of effective health and safety management.

We write policies, risk assessments and method statements around how your business actually works, so your paperwork protects people and wins work rather than sitting on a shelf.

Why documentation matters

If you employ five or more people, the law requires you to have a written health and safety policy. Even with fewer employees, you must still assess and manage the risks your work creates, and your risk assessments need to be suitable and sufficient for what you actually do.

Beyond the legal minimum, clear documentation is what clients, principal contractors and accreditation schemes ask to see before they will work with you. Weak or generic paperwork is one of the most common failures we find in audits: policies copied from a template that names the wrong activities, risk assessments that no one on site has read, method statements that describe a job nobody recognises. Documents like that offer no protection when something goes wrong, and they lose you work long before then.

What are RAMS?

RAMS stands for risk assessments and method statements. A risk assessment identifies hazards, who might be harmed, and how risks are controlled. A method statement sets out, step by step, how a task will be carried out safely.

Together they are the documents most often requested before work starts on site, and well-written RAMS are frequently the difference between winning and losing contracted work. Principal contractors review them before granting site access, so RAMS that are clear, specific to the task and easy to follow reflect directly on how your business is judged.

Documents we prepare

Our consultants review the documents you already have and prepare whatever your business needs, including:

  • Health & safety policies
  • Risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)
  • COSHH assessments
  • Construction Phase Plans
  • Emergency response plans
  • Training plans and toolbox talks
  • Accident investigation reports
  • SSIP accreditation support (CHAS, Constructionline, SMAS, SafeContractor)

All documents are tailored to your business, not generic templates.

How it works

  1. We review what you have

A look at your existing documents and, more importantly, at how your business actually operates: your activities, sites, equipment and people.

  2. We write or update the documents

New documents written from scratch, or existing ones brought up to date, with your team involved so the content reflects real working practice.

  3. You get documents your staff can follow

Clear, practical paperwork handed over and explained, with reviews as legislation changes or your workplace does.

Supporting your accreditations

We regularly help clients achieve and maintain CHAS, Constructionline, SMAS, SafeContractor and ISO 45001 readiness. Strong documentation is the backbone of every SSIP application: assessors want to see a current policy, risk assessments that match your activities and evidence that your arrangements work in practice.

If an application is coming up, we can prepare or refresh the documents it depends on and support the submission itself, either as a one-off piece of work or as part of a retained consultancy package.

Get your documentation sorted

Tell us what you have, what you are missing and what your clients or accreditation bodies are asking for, and we will produce the documents you actually need.

Policies & documentation FAQs

Do I legally need a written health and safety policy?
If you employ five or more people, the law requires your health and safety policy to be written down. With fewer employees you must still have a policy and manage risks; it simply does not have to be in writing, although a written policy is good practice and often requested by clients.
What is a risk assessment and why do I need one?
A risk assessment identifies hazards, who might be harmed, and how risks are controlled. It’s a legal requirement and a key part of preventing accidents, injuries, and enforcement action.
What does a method statement include?
A method statement describes how a task will be carried out safely, step by step: the sequence of work, the plant and equipment involved, the control measures identified in the risk assessment, who is responsible at each stage, and the arrangements for emergencies. A good one reads as a practical brief the people doing the work can actually follow.
Can you update documents we already have?
Yes. You do not need to start from scratch. We review your existing policies, risk assessments and supporting documents, keep what works, and update anything that is out of date or no longer reflects how you operate.
How quickly can you prepare RAMS?
Turnaround is agreed up front and depends on the complexity of the work. In most cases we can begin within 24 to 48 hours, and urgent requests, such as RAMS needed before work can start on site, are treated as a priority.
